Education: The Forgotten Element in Industry-University Relationships

The highly visible, large-scale research agreements between major corporations and research universities imply that higher education’s principal roles in economic development are applied research and technology transfer. This perspective is misleading in two ways. First, it masks higher education’s significant contributions to economic competitiveness through education and training, research, and professional development. Second, it implies that only elite schools and businesses are involved in economic development.
