Professional Loyalty and the Scholarly Community: Reflections Toward a Philosophy for Fostering Faculty

In this essay, the author explores the concepts of vocation, loyalty, and recognition/reward to show that fundamental misunderstandings have undermined the development of sound policies for recruiting and retaining faculty today. He also suggests corrections in the concepts and in the practices which follow from them.
