This review essay appraises the achievement of Bruce Wilshire’s The Moral Collapse of the University, a book which explains the fragmentation of the research university as a combination of Cartesian dualism, Newtonian science, and the professionalization of the academic disciplines. Heslep finds Wilshire’s historical explanations inadequate and his recommended solutions sketchy.
