This qualitative study of community college transfer students at a private university sought students’ perceptions both of the transfer process and of institutions’ academic environments. Students perceived themselves as receiving little help from either institution in the transfer process. Similarly in the academic environment of the university, the successful student was one who was fairly self-reliant, able to survive with minimal instructional help.
