Abstract

In this essay, based on a keynote address, the author calls for scholars of higher education to join in efforts to create a new idea of the university suited to the twenty-first century. She uses her experiences in working to improve the status of women as an example of the ways universities can and must change. Then, considering the contemporary academic ethos, she challenges scholars of higher education to improve their own efforts at building a new, more inclusive community of scholars for the next century.
