Abstract:
Henry James’s refusal of the happy ending is more than a mere refusal to do the conventional thing. Isabel Archer is an early example of James’s conception of being human in the world, a conception that bears points of resemblance to the writings of Eihei Dōgen, founder of Soto Zen Buddhism.
