Abstract

Gloria Naylor's desire to adapt her fiction for the stage received fulfillment when Bailey's Café was produced as a play by the Hartford Stage in March and April of 1994. Directed by Novella Nelson, Bailey's Café on the stage differed significantly from Bailey's Café on the printed page. Because Novella Nelson not only directed the play but worked closely with Gloria Naylor during Naylor's process of rewriting her novel in dramatic form, the Editor believed that Ms. Nelson could offer unique insights into both the form and the meanings of Naylor's fourth novel. Ms. Nelson generously agreed to travel to Virginia for the following conversation.
