Tentative Sessions for the 23rd Pacific Science Congress (PSC-23)

PSA and Academia Sinica are working to confirm and finalize the approved sessions for the 23rd Pacific Science Congress (PSC-23). The Congress will be held 13–17 June 2016 at the campus of Academia Sinica in Taipei, Taiwan.

The current provisional list of sessions, which is still subject to change, is as follows:

B. Keynote Speakers for the 23rd Pacific Science Congress

Plenary Speakers for the PSC-23 have been confirmed, and include the following:

  • • Dr. Takashi Gojobori (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology) will speak on the topic of Biodiversity and Natural Resources

  • • Dr. Sandra Harding (University of California, Los Angeles) will speak on the topic of Human Diversity and Inclusive Development

  • • Mr. Lawrence Kent (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) will speak on the topic of Food/Water/Energy

  • • Dr. Yuan-Tseh Lee (Academia Sinica) will speak on the topic of Science for Society: Building Green Societies

  • • Dr. Gordon McBean (International Council for Science, ICSU) will speak on the topic of Disaster Risk Reduction [End Page 385]

PSA Activities

PSA Council Meeting

The PSA Council, which is the governing body of the Pacific Science Association, will take place during the upcoming 23rd Pacific Science Congress (PSC-23) in Taipei, Taiwan in June 2016. The Council is composed of delegates from each of the PSA Adhering Organizations, representing Australia, China-Beijing, China-Hong Kong, China-Taipei, France, Guam, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Okinawa, Pacific Islands (Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu), Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Thailand, United States, and Vietnam.

PSA Executive Board Elections

PSA Executive Board elections will be held at the aforementioned PSA Council Meeting at the PSC-23 in Taipei in June 2016. All PSA Officer (President, Vice-President, Secretary-General, Treasurer) and Ordinary Board Member positions are open. Adhering Organizations were invited to propose a single name for each of the offices of President, Vice-President, Secretary-General, Treasurer, and for the Ordinary Members of the Executive Board.

The new PSA Board Members will serve from June 2016 to the end of the 24th Pacific Science Congress in 2020. We expect to announce the new members of the PSA Board by the end of June 2016.

Nancy Lewis Gives Plenary Address at Gro Brundtland Awards

PSA President Dr. Nancy Lewis was an invited plenary speaker for the “Gro Brundtland Week of Women in Sustainable Development” (GBW) held 21–26 February 2016 in Tainan, Taiwan (China-Taipei). The week-long GBW was held in Tainan, Taipei, and Hualien in honor of Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, the 2014 Tang Prize Laureate in Sustainable Development, to promote the involvement of younger women researchers from developing countries toward the issues of sustainable development and public health. In support of this goal, the Gro Brundtland Award provided support for five younger female scientists from developing countries to present their work at the event.
