Abstract

This paper aims to explore a thorny question that has been discussed in both Confucianism and Christianity, namely the relation between intellect and will. Taking Zhu Xi 朱熹 (1130–1200) and Meister Eckhart (1260–1328) as exemplars of the respective traditions, this research is intended to demonstrate how this question is conceived and discussed in the context of Zhu Xi and Eckhart, so that some parallels will be drawn and fundamental differences be disclosed on the basis of the primary sources of the two thinkers.
