1. Future Earth

“Future Earth” is a new 10-year international research initiative coordinated by the International Council for Science (ICSU), and comprised of ICSU, the International Social Sciences Council (ISSC), Belmont Forum, UNESCO, UNEP, United Nations University (UNU), and World Meteorological Organization (WMO) that seeks to mobilize scientists and other stake-holders to develop knowledge, options, and solutions to effectively respond to the risks and opportunities of global environmental change and for supporting transformation towards global sustainability. PSA is actively contributing to regional discussions of Future Earth, and PSA President Nancy Lewis will represent the organization at the ICSU-ROAP Future Earth Regional Workshop for Asia and the Pacific in Kuala Lumpur, from 21–23 November 2012.

2. Call for Symposium and Abstracts for the 12th Pacific Science Inter-Congress

Researchers and students are invited to submit symposia proposals and/or abstracts for the 12th Pacific Science Inter-Congress (PSIC-12). Please see News item #2 below for a list of sub-themes. Also note that other themes may be developed based on submission of relevant abstracts, and that side meetings either before or after the Inter-Congress are encouraged.

  • Symposia proposals are now being accepted via an online form at the official website (http://www.psi2013.usp.ac.fj/?page_id=665).

  • Abstracts for oral or poster presentations are now being accepted on the official Inter-Congress website (http://www.psi2013.usp.ac.fj/?page_id=135).

  • Both session proposals and abstracts should be submitted by 31 January 2013 via the official Inter-Congress website using the provided template.

  • Side meetings by relevant institutions are also encouraged. Please contact the Local Organizing Committee for more details.

3. Themes and Details for the 12th Pacific Science Inter-Congress

The main theme and subthemes of the 12th Pacific Science Inter-Congress have been finalized. The focus of the 12th Inter-Congress includes physical, biological, and social sciences and encompasses terrestrial, marine, atmospheric, and social/cultural subjects and approaches in the Pacific Islands and Rim region.

PSIC-12 will be held at the campus of the meeting’s hosts, University of the South Pacific (USP), in Suva, Fiji from 8–12 July 2013. The over-arching theme of “Science for Human Security & Sustainable Development in the Pacific Islands and Rim”. The subthemes of the meeting are:
