Abstract

Through a close study of both image and text, this article dissects Jacquemart and Le Blant’s Histoire artistique, industrielle, et commerciale de la porcelaine and examines how the volume marshalled ceramic design as scientific proof of Japan’s cultural difference and uniqueness in 1860s France.
