The Lexicography of Irish Musical Experience: Notes towards a Digital Future

English Abstract:

The Encyclopaedia of Music in Ireland (EMIR) represents the first comprehensive survey of Irish musical experience across recorded history. It documents many different areas of musical practice in Ireland and beyond. From the general perspective of musical lexicography it broadens the understanding of Irish musical practice as this is conceived in older works of musical reference. EMIR embodies a specific set of editorial principles that aim to dissolve the tension between the claims of the composer and the musical work on one side, and the claims of oral and popular culture in Ireland on the other. As such, it implicitly draws attention to the fundamental challenge of musical lexicography in general, which is to reconcile a quest for information with the imperative of critical and historical interpretation. It is through this distinct approach that EMIR speaks not only to music in Ireland, but to the general practice of musical lexicography in the twenty-first century.

The Encyclopaedia of Music in Ireland (EMIR) représente la première étude exhaustive sur l’expérience musicale irlandaise au cours de l’histoire écrite. Elle permet de se documenter sur de nombreux aspects de la pratique musicale en Irlande et au-delà. D’un point de vue lexicographique, elle élargit la compréhension de la pratique musicale irlandaise en considérant des pièces de répertoire. EMIR expose un panel spécifique de principes éditoriaux dans le but de dissoudre la tension existante entre ce que le compositeur et son oeuvre ont voulu dire d’une part, et d’autre part ce qu’exprime la culture populaire et orale en Irlande. Ainsi, cette encyclopédie souligne la problématique fondamentale de la lexicographie en musique, dont le but est de réconcilier une quête d’information avec le besoin impératif d’interprététation critique et historique. En ce sens, l’approche de l’encyclopédie EMIR ne concerne pas que la musique en Irlande, mais aussi la pratique générale de la lexicographie musicale au 21e siècle.

German Abstract:

Die Encyclopaedia of Music in Ireland (EMIR) bieten den ersten bekannten Überblick über die irische Musik. Sie dokumentiert viele verschiedenen Gebiete der Musikausübung in Irland und darüber hinaus. Aus der üblichen Perspektive musikalischer Lexikografie betrachtet ist das Verständ nis der irischen Musikausübung hier gegenüber älteren musikalischen Nachschlagewerken erweitert worden. EMIR fußt auf einem besonderen Spektrum editorischer Prinzipien, die darauf abzielen, das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen der Welt der Komponisten und ihrer Werke auf der einen Seite und der Welt der überlieferten und populären Kultur in Irland auf der anderen Seite aufzulösen. In diesem Sinne wird gleichzeitig der Schwerpunkt auf die grundlegende Herausforderung musikalischer Lexikografie im Allgemeinen gelegt, die darin liegt, die Suche nach Information mit dem Anspruch kritischer und historischer Auslegung in Einklang zu bringen. Durch diesen besonderen Anspruch bezieht EMIR nicht nur zur Musik in Irland Stellung, sondern auch zur generellen Praxis musikalischer Lexikografie im einundzwanzigsten Jahrhundert.
