Abstract

The Pagoda is a novel about Chinese Immigration to Jamaica during the 19th century. Specifically, it follows the experiences of Lowe, a Chinese woman passing as a male shopkeeper in rural Jamaica. Lowe is referred to as "he" throughout. In this section, Lowe, who is involved in an arranged marriage with Miss Sylvie, comes to learn startling revelations about the people with whom "he" lives: Miss Sylvie; the housekeeper, Dulcie, and her son, Omar; and Cecil, the deceased shipmaster on whose boat "he" was a stowaway from China to Jamaica.
