ABSTRACT:
This essay offers an interpretation of Garcilaso’s Neo-Latin odes dedicated respectively to Antonio Telesio and Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda. I propose that these poems express an ambiguous attitude towards the two large-scale cultural movements in which Garcilaso has often been considered an exemplary figure: the literary project of translatio studii and the political/military project of translatio imperii. On one hand, the ode to Telesio testifies to a desire to exchange the poet’s Peninsular patria with a new home at the heart of humanist Naples; on the other, the ode to Sepúlveda provides evidence of the influence on Garcilaso of early modern pacifism, and of his misgivings regarding the Emperor’s imperial designs.
