Norbert Paulo, PhD, is a lecturer in practical philosophy at the University of Salzburg, Austria. He earned his PhD in philosophy from Hamburg University, Germany, where he studied both philosophy and law. In his forthcoming book, The Confluence of Philosophy and Law in Applied Ethics, he employs legal methods to inform the debate on methodology in applied ethics. His research interests include applied ethics, ethical theory, empirical ethics, and social and legal philosophy.
Benjamin Bautz, MA, is a fourth year medical student at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Prior to medical school, he earned an MA in philosophy and a BS in biology, both from Stanford University. He will begin residency training in Emergency Medicine this July.
Laura Specker Sullivan, PhD, is a postdoctoral neuroethics fellow at the Center for Sensorimotor Neural Engineering, University of Washington and a postdoctoral research fellow at the National Core for Neuroethics, University of British Columbia. She is a recipient of the Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship for research on informed consent in Kyoto, Japan. Her research is primarily in cross-cultural medical ethics, neuroethics, and research ethics.
Marco Annoni, PhD, is research fellow at the National Research Council (CNR), Institute of Biomedical Technologies, Italy. He is the scientific secretary of the Ethics Committee of Fondazione Umberto Veronesi and part of the scientific secretariat of the CNR Research Ethics and Bioethics Advisory Committee. His main research interests concern biomedical ethics, American Philosophy, and placebo effects.
Franklin G. Miller, PhD is Professor of Medical Ethics in Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. He retired as a member of the senior faculty in the Department of Bioethics, National Institutes of Health in 2015. His principal current research interests are examination of ethical issues in clinical research, death and dying, and the placebo effect. Dr. Miller is Deputy Editor of Perspectives of Biology and Medicine and a fellow of the Hastings Center. [End Page vi]
