When you arrived in charcoal October, we swept up every last hairball and mote, scrubbed the pine floor into a fine shimmer and wiped down the bulk of our winter coats. When you arrived that windburned afternoon we’d heard the jangle of Harry Potter, Ron, Snape, and Hermione, but their tune in our ears was faint whistle and simmer. When you arrived we appeased the doctor’s desire for sleep, giving up our own in the smoldering ashes of terror, fallen towers, remains of skin and bones. It was mercy to rock with you at night, to touch your hair in the soft, morning light. [End Page 122]
