Abstract

The description and analysis of secondary stress distribution in Israeli Hebrew was first attempted in the early 1980s. Some important issues are still unresolved, particularly the question of whether function words should be lexically stressed or underlyingly unmarked for stress, and the interaction of destressing, secondary stress assignment, and stress shift. This is an attempt to settle these questions.
