In Italo Calvino’s If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler, mystery and tension surround a series of publishing errors, which pulls the reader joyfully through the novel. We don’t want to spoil the story, so we won’t say too much, but the result is delightful for Calvino’s readers.

When publishing errors happen in real life, however, the result is frustrating for all involved. And so it is with enormous regret that we must acknowledge a production error of our own. In the Fall 2014 issue of cream city review, the last sentence of Ihab Hassan’s “Clouds” went missing. A mystery, to be sure, but one in which we regret being involved. With Hassan’s permission, we are reprinting his story – full of wonderful mystery itself – here, complete with its last sentence.
