Source, Authority, and Audience in the BBC’s Merlin

Although Merlin’s producers claim to target a young audience, much of the program’s appeal is found in intertextual references to and deviations from medieval Arthurian literature. The dynamic tension created between continuity and innovation can only be appreciated by those with some—or even significant—knowledge of Merlin’s medieval antecedents. (JS)
