It is always a pleasure to collaborate, as Journal Editor, with the Guest Editors of our Special Issues. Working on this Special Issue, despite its sombre subject matter, has been no exception. It pushes forward the boundaries of research into the History of Emotions, bringing before a broad scholarly readership the advances being made by researchers in the ARC Centre for the History of Emotions (CHE). ‘Medieval and Early Modern Responses to Death and Dying’ is not a relaxing read, but it is an important collection of articles that I feel sure will be well received.

I want to thank the Guest Editors, Rebecca McNamara and Una McIlvenna, for their exemplary care in the initial selection of titles for the issue, and their ongoing work with the authors. And, as always, I thank Lesley O’Brien for her scholarly and meticulous approach to copy-editing. [End Page xi]
