Pip’s Life

This essay examines the sexual plots that circulate in Great Expectations. I argue that the novel’s emphasis on sexual withholdingor delay has consequences not only for how we read characters’ development, but also how we read the famously multiple endings of Great Expectations--the planned ending, where Dickens keeps Estella andPip apart, and the published ending where he poses their connection asa problem not entirely solved by time’s passage.
