Dedication The dedication of an issue of the Quarterly to Professor Clifford Leech cannot begin to record. his services to the world of learning or to the University of Toronto in particular. We have the more modest hope that he will share our pleasure in recalling the period, 1970-4, when he served as Chairman of our Honorary Advisory Board. The breadth of his interests is demonstrated by the checklist of the writings to date of this very active scholar and critic, but it is appropriate that the issue should concentrate on his central lifelong concern, the drama of the English Renaissance. None of the essays was commissioned or solicited; happily , three prove to be by old friends and colleagues, and the other, by two younger scholars, was accepted on the recommendation ofone of our most reliable expert readers -Clifford Leech. Brian Parker was his successor as Director of the Graduate Centre for the Study of Drama, and his successor in tum, Ann Saddlemyer, has provided the checklist; Alexander Leggatt is now Secretary of the Centre. We are particularly honoured to include a review, written shortly before his death, by the late Professor Allardyce Nicoll, who directed Professor Leech's thesis and had remained a lifelong friend.
