PUBLICATIONS IN OTHER LANGUAGES 539 the steadily increasing share that the same community is taking in the life of Canada. The whole series will ultimately be invaluable to students of communal history. Two Yiddish works by Canadians bear testimony to the deep interest of the Jewish community in matters of literature and of social justice. On the Pain of the World, by I. Goldkorn, of Winnipeg, was actually printed in Tel-Aviv, Israel. It consists of some forty-five short essays on great writers, ranging all the way from Byron, Shelley and Keats to Nietzsche, Dostoyevsky, and Strindberg. No new research material has been unearthed. The author's purpose seems rather to provide the general reader with Huent sketches. N. Shemen, of Toronto, has published privately through the Morris Printing Company of that city, a massive two-volume treatise on The Jewish Attitude towards Labour: Social Justice based on Biblical, Talmudic and Rabbinic Studies. He has no trouble in demonstrating the deep human concern, at these three stages, of the great masters of Hebrew thought. Whether the modem representatives of capital and labour, meeting around the bargaining table, would be amenable to the erudition and noble reasonableness of such a presentation is highly questionable. Perhaps it would need to be put into sweetened capsule form before they would even tty to swallow it. CHECK-LIST OF TITLES, COMPILED BY WATSON KIRKCONNELL BECK (RICHARD), Skald athafnanna (Icel.
