This article considers Studs Terkel not simply as an oral historian but as a historian. It argues that Terkel, long recognized as a popularizer of oral history but often criticized as a sentimental populist, deserves to be taken more seriously—and that a key to doing so lies in recognizing how his posture and method exemplify important aspects of the historian’s craft.
