Books on Art' ANDREW BELL Painting in Canada, the most advanced of our arts, is slowly acquiring its own vocabulary. During the past year, for example, there have been two important new accessions: Canadian Art by Graham McInnes, and The Growth of Canadian Painting by Donald W. Buchanan. Both books avoid the pitfalls of "talking down," as well as that fancy art jargon which makes almost unintelligible so much of the contemporary talk about painting. But strangely neither title conveys with sufficient precision what is inside its Jacket. The implication of the label "Canadian Art" is that this is a book which deals only with painting. "The Arts in Canada" would seem a much truer description, for though the substantial emphasis is on painting, there are, in addition, valuable sections on subjects as diverse as sculpture, architecture, industrial design, handicrafts, films, and art in the theatre. Three centuries are covered, so that in result the work is a highly acceptable ABC of our arts from the earliest colonial days. In short this thoughtful book is a good point of...
