The essay is an examination of a variety of historical approaches to the study of Anti-Catholicism in American history. It explores works representative of the various methodologies used to explain anti-Catholic sensibilities and the discrimination faced by Catholics in the last two and a half centuries. The essay also offers a proposal for a new methodological approach in analyzing anti-Catholicism, using Human Identity Theory as explicated by Vern Neufeld Redekop.
