Jaime O. Bofill Calero is an assistant professor at the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico. He studied ethnomusicology and music theory at the University of Arizona, obtaining a PhD in 2013. His doctoral dissertation, “Improvisation in Jíbaro Music: A Structural Analysis,” is a study on the generative processes that shape the art of improvising in oral cultures. Bofill’s research and ethnographic films focus on the topics of improvisation, dance dramas, and cultural hybridity in folk and popular music traditions of Puerto Rico, Peru, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

Juan Pablo González es profesor titular del Instituto de Historia de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile y del Instituto de Música de la Universidad Alberto Hurtado, SJ, de Santiago. Estudia y enseña música popular del siglo XX en Chile y América Latina desde una perspectiva histórico-social, socio-estética y analítica. También estudia y enseña música chilena de concierto del siglo XX, considerando la relación entre las vanguardias europeas y los lenguajes locales. Su libro más reciente es Pensar la música desde América Latina: Problemas e interrogantes (Ediciones Universidad Alberto Hurtado, 2013).

María Mercedes Liska is an ethnomusicologist who graduated from the Conservatorio Superior de Música Manuel de Falla (CSMMF), in Buenos Aires, where she currently teaches. She is Magister of communication and culture and is a doctoral candidate of social sciences at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA). She is also an executive committee member of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music, Latin American branch (IASPM-AL).

Rubén López Cano es profesor de tiempo completo en la Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (Barcelona). Es autor de libros y artículos sobre retórica y semiótica musicales, filosofía de la cognición corporizada de la música, música popular urbana, reciclaje y cultura musical digital, musicología audiovisual, diáspora, cuerpo y subjetividad en música, investigación artística y epistemología de la investigación musical. Dirigió TRANS—Revista Transcultural de Música (2005–2013). Actualmente es investigador asociado del proyecto europeo METABODY, asesor del programa [End Page 167] de formación de investigadores en música de Colombia y miembro del grupo de trabajo Artistic Research in Higher Music Education del Polifonia Erasmus Network for Music.

Fernando Purcell es profesor asociado del Instituto de Historia de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, donde desarrolla docencia e investigación histórica sobre diversos aspectos culturales de las relaciones entre Estados Unidos y América Latina. Ha publicado artículos sobre el impacto del cine hollywoodense en Chile durante la primera mitad del siglo XX, abordando temas como la censura y la propaganda en perspectiva transnacional. Su libro más reciente es ¡De película! Hollywood y su impacto en Chile (Taurus, 2012).

Víctor Rondón received his PhD in history and master’s in musicology. He is a professor and researcher at the Music Department of the School of Art at the University of Chile. His dissertation, “Jesuitas, música y cultura en el Chile colonial,” won the 2009 Excellence Award at the Catholic University. In 2002 and 2004 he coordinated the Musicological Symposium at Festival Misiones de Chiquitos. Since 1997 he has been a scholar at the Comisión Nacional de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica de Chile. He also plays recorder and has recorded music from the colonial era for four years.

María Edurne Zuazu is a Fulbright scholar and PhD candidate in musicology at CUNY Graduate Center, where she is also pursuing the Film Studies Certificate. She has published and presented on popular music and historical memory in Spain, as well as on Lady Gaga’s music videos, the queerness of lip-synching, and the audiovisual experience in Jean-Luc Godard’s Dans le noir du temps. She is currently focusing on the status and fates of voice recordings, and on the potential and significance of the different forms of ventriloquism in which they partake. [End Page 168]
