Abstract

This essay traces the history of the Popol Vuh and its various adaptations for children to understand how and why the text has been appropriated and reinvented by those in a position of authority within the Guatemalan educational system and beyond, especially with regard to national identity politics. In particular, it reviews the most recent versions of the book for children by Eduardo Galeano, Nivio López Vigil, Francisco Morales Santos, and Victor Montejo published since the 1996 Peace Accords were signed, which ended the decades-long civil war in Guatemala.
