I’ve gone now to the shadow-passages,   through that hushed land.

When I found you there, too,   I wept, I wept.

Who knows, besides, what we speak of?   Above us, the dragonflies,

newfound in blue,   hover among our decibels.

This whispering you and I do…   it exposes a nest.

I cup my brown hands toward you.   Within: two smoothed eggs,

unburdening, growing   less overcast.

These are the true hearts   plucked from the lasting.

We measure out the shrines,   we nurse ourselves clean.

Patricia Killelea

Patricia Killelea is a mixed-heritage Chicana poet and musician. She is the author of the poetry collection Other Suns (Swan Scythe Press, 2011). “Gegenschein” is the title poem of her forthcoming collection, Counterglow. She holds a master’s degree in Creative Writing and English from UC Davis, where she is currently a doctoral candidate in Native American Studies. Her poems have appeared in As Us, Gigantic, and many other journals.
