Abstract

In my article I restore Poe’s “Cask of Amontillado,” “Literati of New York City,” and “Thousand-and-Second Tale of Scheherazade” to their original publication in Godey’s Lady’s Book. My main thesis is that these pieces, apparently standing out of the usual literary matter published in Godey’s, were at the same time attuned to the carnivalesque and interactive spirit of the magazine. The essay is an attempt to look at Poe’s writings for Godey’s as a complex and conscious collaboration with the magazine’s spirit and style that eventually reveals both ironic and playful sides of his work.
