In the Fall 2011 issue of Appalachian Heritage which featured the work of Frank X Walker, Dr. William H. Turner, in his piece titled “Affrilachia as Brand” failed to acknowledge the influence of Dr. Doris Y. Wilkinson by citing her work. He is deeply indebted to and deeply influenced by her scholarship, in this case an article titled “Rethinking the Concept of Minority” from the March 2000 issue of Journal of Sociology and Social Welfare. Turner wishes for Appalachian Heritage readers to know that Dr. Wilkinson—recently retired from the University of Kentucky Sociology Department—taught him as an undergraduate at that university, from which he graduated in 1968. But, more importantly, she is best known for her pioneering work on critical race theory and the sociology of health and illness, with the University of Kentucky establishing an endowed professorship, the Doris Wilkinson Distinguished Professorship in Sociology and the Humanities, which honors her outstanding career in the discipline.
