The birth of the new state of the Republic of South Sudan (RSS) continues to generate debate among students of African politics. The core question that must be addressed is how the State will survive in the highly competitive and complex international system. This paper examines the major challenges, including boundary problems, oil wealth, national integration, and system of government and citizenship, that may affect the stability of the state.
