Addendum to "The Women's Studies Ph.D.:
An Archive"
The information on Union Institute and University was inadvertently omitted from the 15.1 (Spring 2003) report, "The Women's Studies Ph.D.: An Archive."
Department/Program Name: Union Institute and University (UI&U) does not divide its programs by departments, the Ph.D. program is interdisciplinary and every learner develops a curriculum with the assistance of a six-member doctoral committee that s/he chooses.Degree Offered: Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Women's Studies or Feminist Studies
Students in Residence: There are no learners in continuous residence. The program is national, and geographically dispersed with learners and faculty across the United States.
Mission Statement/Themes and Tracks: UI&U, founded in 1964, is a unique university devoted to adult education, learner-centered programs, interdisciplinarity, social relevancy, and excellence in scholarship. We are committed to creating lasting and effective alliances between scholars and activists.
Qualifications for Admission: Most learners admitted to the doctoral program have a Master's degree, although a few have Bachelor's degrees and considerable work experience in the field.
Program of Study/Required Courses: All doctoral learners must attend 35 days of "residence" experiences, such as a ten-day entry colloquium and ten peer days organized by the learners themselves. There are no required courses that apply to all learners; each learner negotiates with his or her doctoral committee the courses required for his or her specific program. A learner can declare a concentration in Women's Studies or Feminist Studies at any stage in a doctoral program with the approval of their committee.
Contact Persons for 2003: Karen Lonero, Karen.Lonero@tui.edu or Assistant Dean Kathleen Rourke, Kathleen.Rourke@tui.edu. For admissions in the doctoral program contact Nan Fischer, nan.fischer@tui.edu.
Additional Information: There have been over 110 dissertations with a Women's Studies focus completed since 1974.
