Abstract

Few projects have aroused as much rhetoric and debate as the tunnel that will link Britain to continental Europe in 1994. Eurotunnel is a positive addition to the European Community’s transport network. However, unless transport infrastructure is improved between regional development areas and Eurotunnel, the project will serve only to strengthen the core area of the Community. If Eurotunnel is to provide a much needed boost to regional development, state-centered perspectives must change. The Eurotunnel hinterland should be treated as one functional and perceptual development area that transcends state boundaries.
