In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

EDITORIAL NOTES T his edition of the Yearbook marks the beginning of a partnership between the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers and the Uni versity of H aw aii Press. As many of you know, from its inception until 3 years ago the Yearbook was printed and distributed by Or egon State University Press. The past three issues have been self-published, meaning that the copyediting, printing, and distri bution were done separately. Fortunately for us, the copyediting was done by Rick Cooper, the same person who had worked on some of the Yearbook volumes for OSU Press, so a degree of continu ity was maintained. However, we had to contract for printing, and the horrendous task of wrapping, addressing, and mailing all cop ies of the Yearbook fell to Bob Richardson. Again on behalf of the Association I would like to thank Bob for the wonderful job he has done over the past few years in getting the Yearbook out to members; it is difficult for us to imagine just how much hard work goes into distributing, but Bob shouldered the task without complaint and for that we are truly grateful. While I'm at it, thanks are also due to past presidents Dan Arreola and Robin Datel for searching for a new publisher and then hammering out the contract. The University of Hawai'i Press appears to be an excellent home for the APCG Yearbook. Already we have established a good work ing relationship, and as I write this piece in early June everything looks set to go for a swift printing/distribution. UH Press has been very accommodating to us thus far: the editors have supplied books for review; have made excellent suggestions for improving the for mat and overall "look" of the Yearbook-, and they have added us to their Web site along with the other journals they produce (stop by at www.uhpress.hawaii.edu/journals/apcg/index.html). I have every expectation that the partnership between the Association and the Press will be long and mutually beneficial. Turning to editorial matters, I would like to announce the addi tion of the newest APCG Board member, Judy Walton at Humboldt State University. Judy replaces Tina Kennedy, who stepped down from the board because of presidential duties. Thank you Tina for 3 years of service, and welcome Judy! 165 166 APCG YEARBOOK •Volume 62 •2000 As always, I hope you enjoy this volume of the Yearbook. I think you will find the articles, although fewer in number than usual, to be very interesting and covering a broad spectrum of geographic pursuits. I particularly want to acknowledge the folks who re sponded to my call for more book reviews; I am very pleased that a full complement of reviews appears in this edition. I also wish to thank the editorial board members for their quick turnaround on manuscripts and the authors for their patience during the editorial process. Finally, I would again like to thank Rick Cooper, the person who takes everything I send him and cheerfully puts it into final form ready for publication. His expert editing, skill with handling graph ics and various types of non-text materials, and speed are very impressive. Indeed, I am continually amazed when I receive, for example, a book review in the morning, then, after some editing of my own, forward it to Rick, who does further editing, puts it into PageMaker, and gets a PDF back to me by early afternoon so I can forward it to the author for final review the same day. Much of the success of the Yearbook over the past few years can be attributed to the high degree of care, dedication, and professionalism shown by Rick; he certainly makes my job as editor much easier and more enjoyable! This is also the first volume of the Yearbook that was done almost completely by e-mail: all of the correspondence, including movement of the articles (text and graphics), between Rick and me, and most of the interaction with authors, including reviews of their "galley" PDFs, were done through cyberspace. Ah, the joys of tech nology! Darrick Danta California State University, Northridge ...
