Artist’s Statement

I’ve always felt inclined to see art mix with the real world, to be tested by the general public and unpredictable outdoor conditions. So I avoid any patronizing or dumbing down for the audience and just create what interests me most. This ends up being something direct and sensual, responsive to architecture, and experimental like science. [End Page 614]

Momo

MOMO is the pseudonym of an American public-space artist born in San Francisco in 1974. MOMO has spent the majority of his life outdoors. Painting landscapes “plein air” in school led to an appreciation of graffiti and he joined a graffiti crew in 1999. Fourteen years of experimentation with unsanctioned public art has resulted in eclectic projects and collaborations involving maps, tide-powered sculpture, contributors video, deconstructive murals, large-scale outdoor collage, HTML scripts, and augmented reality. MOMO has recently focused on painting murals as a means to explore drafting principles, color, and composition on a massive scale. In the last five years he has created nonrepresentational full-building facades in Brazil, France, Belgium, Jamaica, Italy, Holland, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. He currently keeps a studio in New Orleans.
