Abstract

Literary theory and criticism in France is, and has always been, centered around Writing as a cause, a subjectless event, and an intransitive mystery, at the expense of reading and readers, whose social diversity and political workings remain largely overlooked. Neither critical sociologies of reading, nor the more literary phenomenology of the act of reading, have been able, so far, to make room for the Anglo-American politics of reading, itself a historical assumption of the relativity of interpretation which took various forms, from literary Marxisms to cultural and minority studies—all of which can be seen, as a result, as the political blindspot of literary studies in France.
