Helen Hunt Jackson is best remembered as an author of adult books, most notably Ramona, her 1884 novel about the plight of California Mission Indians. She also wrote several children's books including Nelly's Silver Mine: A Story of Colorado Life (1878). Although largely unknown today, it is an innovative novel that should appeal to modern readers interested in early Western literature as all as those intrigued to its strong female protagonist.
