Abstract

Lenz reviews Marcia Brown's artistic career including the creation of award-winning picture books, such as Cinderella (1955) and Once a Mouse (1962). Lenz draws on the resources of Brown's essays and a videotaped interview with the former Head of Special Collections at the University of Albany Libraries where Brown's papers are housed. Lenz discusses seven metaphors representing Brown's creative process. She finds Brown's poetics of creativity encapsulated in rich images expressing, what Brown calls, the big, soul-searching joys of the arts.
