Abstract

In her play, Usted está aquí (You Are Here, 2009) Bárbara Colio creates an Antigone-type character to address questions of justice and social responsibility. The play is based on the story of Isabel Miranda de Wallace, who relentlessly sought justice for her son, Hugo Alberto Wallace Miranda, who was kidnapped and killed in Mexico City in 2005. The return to antiquity draws attention to the perennial existence of power struggles and violence, but the references to a twenty-first-century Mexican reality and the use of metatheatrical devices reveal Colio’s conviction that through activism justice can be achieved.
