Abstract

This “familiar” essay recounts the author’s experiences living as an expatriate and teaching Hemingway in regions of the world whose borders could be uneasy and where English was, at best, his students’ second language. What the author learned from his students, and what they learned from him, demonstrates first-hand that Hemingway’s stories are not bound by national or linguistic limits, that they can uncover the compassion lurking behind rough edges and prompt dialogue across conflicts and cultures.
