When things finally settle in my neighborhood, when the kids on four-wheelers and muffler-less motorcycles quit the day, when the foot traffic of pill-seeking strangers stumbling the sidewalk lessens, when I only hear the mumble of conversation through windows over televisions that glow all night, I go out to sit on my porch, in the dark, witnessing it all rotting together into what I can only call home, the dusky shadows, the smell, its sick energy mixed and swallowed down into my gut like a disgusting meal made by a relative you can’t and won’t refuse. Part of me wants to run away, the other to stand my ground, to stay just long enough to eventually root out the true wealth of this little spot of mine. [End Page 71]

Larry D. Thacker was the featured photographer for our Winter 2012 issue. He lives in Middlesborough, Kentucky, where he was raised and works for his alma mater, Lincoln Memorial University, as Associate Dean of Students. He is a painter, poet and photographer and the author of a poetry chapbook and a book about mountain mysteries
