In the First Catilinarian oration, Cicero transforms Catiline into a slave by rhetorically and metaphorically "branding" him. While Catiline attempts to present himself as a proper Roman man on the outside, Cicero publicizes Catiline's depravity, slavishness and criminality by branding Catiline's true nature, a nature that he conceals behind his seemingly aristocratic forehead and the closed doors of his private home.
