6 0 T h e S o u t h e a s t e r n G e o g r a p h e r LILLIAN WORLEY STIMSON MEMORIAL FUND On May 17, 1968, Professor Lillian Worley Stimson, a member of the geography staff at the University of Tennessee since 1948, died from injuries received in an automobile accident near Franklin, Tennessee, on July 15, 1966. Dr. Stimson received her A. B. degree from Alabama College and taught there until 1947. In 1933 she obtained an M. A. degree from the University of Wisconsin. In 1949 she was chosen as Alabama College’s “Alumna of the Year,’’and that same year she earned her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina. Professor Stimson’s particular interests in geography included the South, conservation, political, and urban studies. She was also very concerned with geographic education and participated in many training programs for tea chers of geography. In 1965 she organized and directed a National Defense Education Act Institute in geography at U-T and was participating in a simi lar program at Peabody College at the time of her accident. She also was active in promoting the involvement of women in education and gave consi derably of her time to Delta Kappa Gamma, international honor society for women educators, and to the American Association of University Women. She was a member of the Association of American Geographers, including the Southeastern Division, the National Council for Geographic Education, Sig ma Xi, and the Tennessee Academy of Science. Dr. Stimson is remembered for her kindness and consideration for students and faculty. Few people have been more passionately committed to educa tion and to the geographic profession. A number of people have expressed an interest in memorializing Dr. Stimson. Because of this and in view of her known interest in establishing a visiting speaker program, the Department of Geography at the University of Tennessee has established the Lillian Worley Stimson Memorial Fund and all interested persons are invited to contribute as they see fit. Definite plans are being made to present a memorial program during the Fall Quarter in which one or more outstanding geographers would participate. It may be come an annual series. It is also hoped that it will be possible to present some memorialized volumes to the library. Contributions may be sent to the Department of Geography, University of Tennessee, or to the U-T Development Office, 104 Alumni Hall. All checks should be made out to the University of Tennessee, with the notation that they are for the Lillian Worley Stimson Memorial Fund. ...
