Abstract

Computers have caused a revolution in organizational management. As the technology of computers has developed, so has the sophistication of information systems software. This article traces the transition of information management from basic data processing to decision support systems. It reports on various methods used by the Division of Research at Gallaudet College to manage its information needs regarding personnel, budgets, project timelines, and facilities, using both the mainframe computer and microcomputers. The application of these methods of information management to other educational settings is demonstrated. Special emphasis is placed on a shared data base that allows for the analysis of current operations and the ability to project outcomes of various decision strategies. Considerations in the development and maintenance of data bases and in the decision to use a mainframe or microcomputers to maintain records are also discussed.
