The organizers of the Fifteenth Annual Legacies Dallas History Conference welcome proposals from both professional and lay historians on topics related to the theme "The Unusual Side of Dallas: Unique Personalities, Impossible Dreams, Unexpected Landmarks, and Lingering Legends."

Although Dallas has a reputation as being a rather serious, business-minded city, it has nurtured plenty of colorful figures (such as H. L. Hunt) and surprising endeavors (like navigating the Trinity River). Registered city landmarks include an all-concrete house built more than a hundred years ago by a man who believed in reincarnation. Popular legends include the mysterious Lady of White Rock Lake. The conference planners hope to enlighten and entertain attendees with such out-of-the-ordinary stories.

All papers must be based on original research and must not have been presented or published elsewhere. The best papers will be published in a subsequent issue of Legacies: A History Journal for Dallas and North Central Texas. Those interested in presenting papers should submit a brief summary of their proposal by July 1, 2013, to Dallas History Conference, 1515 S. The Fifteenth Annual Legacies History Conference will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2014. The Texas State Historical Association is one of a dozen historical organizations and libraries that jointly sponsor the conference each year.

Calls for Papers

The East Texas Historical Association (ETHA) invites proposals for papers and sessions for its annual fall meeting to be held in Nacogdoches from September 26-28, 2013, at the Fredonia Hotel.

Topics that cover all aspects of East Texas's regional heritage and history receive preference, but any proposal that deals with Texas history is welcome. The ETHA prefers the submission of complete sessions (presider and three presenters or presider-commentator and two presenters), but individual submissions are also encouraged.

For session proposals, please include the names, physical addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of presider-commentator and presenters, along with a session title, titles of presentations or topics, and no more than a one-page summary of each presentation. Individual proposals should also submit individual information. The ETHA welcomes innovative formats for sessions, including discussion panels, poster presentations, or forums as well as traditional paper presentations. The deadline for submission is May 1, 2013. Presenters will be notified of acceptance by June 3, 2013. Electronic submissions are highly preferred.

The Houston Public Library's Friends of the Texas Room is now soliciting entries for the Julia Ideson Award. The deadline for entries is June 1, 2013. The award commemorates the Houston Public Library's first director, Julia Bedford Ideson (1885-1945) and recognizes distinguished projects that document Houston and Texas history and culture. In 2013 the call is for published books. The Julia Ideson Award will be presented by the Friends of the Texas Room at its quarterly meeting in October, 2013. Eligible entries include scholarly research projects completed within the past five years (2008-2013) that document local Houston and/ or Texas history and culture, significantly, but not exclusively, use the resources of the Houston Metropolitan Research Center of the Houston Public Library.
