Abstract

This SHOT presidential address surveys the past thirty years of the historiography of technology, especially in regard to the themes of the science-technology relationship, the users and technology, and attempts to go beyond SCOT. It argues that historians of technology should pay more attention to the foundational issue of race in order to write more powerful stories that counter the standard progress narratives of autonomous technology automatically benefitting society.
