Modem Drama Studies: An Annual Bibliography LISA M. POTTlE WJrn THE ASSISTANCE OF REBECCA CAMERON AND CHARLES COSTELLO The primary objective of the annual bibliography, which remains unchanged in this issue, is to record current scholarship, criticism, and commentary that may prove valuable to students ofdramatic literature and, to a lesserextent, oftheatre history. The bibliography includes all playwrights who lived past 1899 (plus Becque and BOchner) and influential theatre figures other than performers. Reviews, reprinted books (unless the edition has been corrected or updated), unpublished theses, and graduate student periodicals are generally excluded. Also excluded in this year's bibliography are publications of letters or diaries. The bibliography does not include publications of original texts of plays or translations. The annual bibliography also serves as a supplement to Charles Carpenter's Modern Drama Scholarship and Criticism 1966-1980: An International Bibliography (University of Toronto Press 1986). The checklist is divided as follows: A General and Miscellaneous (including reference works) B American C British and Irish D Canadian E Hispanic (including Portuguese) F French (including Belgian) G Italian H Germanic (including Austrian, Swiss, and Dutch) J Scandinavian K Eastern European (Russian, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Balkan, Baltic) L Post-Colonial and Asian "General and Miscellaneous" includes those works that do not fit into any other category, except on occasion a .general geographic one. Geographic categories are arranged so that general and miscellaneous titles come first, followed by specific subjects that properly belong to that same geographic area. An article Modern Drama, 39 ([996) 247 An Annual Bibliography about several Canadian playwrights will therefore be found first in the general Canadian section and then under each of the playwrights discussed, following the general Canadian sections. Journal titles, publishers, places of publication, and names used as subjects are given in full, except where convention dictates otherwise. Subtitles of journals are not given in.the entries but are included in the "List of Journals Cited, [996." Cross-references have been eliminated in favour offull citations for every occurrence of an entry. Some attempt has been made to include the contents of anthologies and other kinds of multiple-item texts. either as individual " entries or in content descriptions. MLA conventions for capitalizing have been used for English-languagejournals, butan attempt has been made in the case of foreign-language journals and monographs to follow the practice usual for a given language. The bibliographic form is a modified Turabian, in that titles of journal articles and monographs are not capitalized, while the authors' names are provided in all capitals for ease of reading. A specific modification is that the "no." abbreviation is used where there is no volume number for a journal. Entries coverthe period from April, 1995 to March, 1996, with the exception of a number of items that were brought to my attention as not having been cited in previous issues ofthe bibliography. Subscribers are welcome to send in citations of other lapses for future inclusion, particularly if they have knowledge of specialized or foreign-language fields of drama. Harvard University's online library catalogue was again the main source used for monographic entries other than Canadian. I would like to thank in particular Rebecca Cameron and Charles Costello for their hard work researching the entries, Sharon Brown and her colleagues at the University of Toronto for the laborious job of foreign-language referencing, Sandra Alston for her emergency technical advice, and Irene Dutton, Alan Thomas, and Hersh Zeifman for sharing their all-purpose advice and experience.
