On March 4-7, 2004, the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture will be hosting "The Atlantic World and Virginia, 1550-1624," a conference that promises to renovate our understanding of the circumstances surrounding the European settlement of the Chesapeake. Those wishing to attend should contact Beverly A. Smith at IEAHC1@wm.edu.

This issue includes the MLA Citation for Sacvan Bercovitch naming him Honored Scholar of Early American Literature for 2002. To supply a full appreciation of Sacvan Bercovitch's contributions to literary and cultural studies, Early American Literature has commissioned Christopher Looby to supply a survey and reflection. This will appear in a future issue.

At the time of publication we learned of the death of our colleague Cheryl Oreovizc of the English Department of Purdue University. A 1972 Ph.D. from Penn State University, Oreovicz was one of the earliest early Americanists who employed a transatlantic perspective to the study of women's lives and writings.

New in print: Former Early American Literature editor Philip Gura has just released through the University of North Carolina Press, C. F Martin and his Guitars, 1796-1873. Gura is the first historian to study thoroughly the career of legendary guitar-maker C. F. Martin from his humble start as an importer of musical instruments in New York City in the 1830s through his move to Nazareth, Pennsylvania, and the founding of C. F. Martin and Co. Based in hitherto unstudied letters, account books, and inventories, this volume establishes how a German immigrant from Europe's guild tradition became the finest American guitar maker of his time and created a uniquely American business. With more the 175 illustrations, many in color, this book is a handsome and important history of an American music tradition.

The Second Ibero/Anglo-American Summit will be held in Providence, R.I., in autumn 2005, hosted by Brown University. [End Page 547]
