  • Michael Kiernan: Featured Photographer
  • WC Kilby

Michael Kiernan is a photographer with a unique style and a clear, bright vision. In some moments, his work presents bold new takes on the Appalachian South and its people. In others, it revisits the old with a fresh perspective. At all times it is a pleasure.

The Connecticut native received his first Bachelor of Arts Degree, in Psychology, from Southern Connecticut State College in 1979 and his second, in Photojournalism, from Western Kentucky University in 1987. Since then, Kiernan has offered his photographic skill and expertise to numerous institutions and universities and has traveled extensively in pursuit of his photos. He has participated in several exhibition, including, in 2000, at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC. a display of the brick makers of Jurez, Mexico for their Center for Folk Life and Cultural Heritage Exhibit.

In August of 2001, Kiernan joined the staff of Virginia Tech as Photography Manager, responsible for coordinating photography and related work for the University’s many departments. There he has worked with and photographed many of the most important and distinguished scholars and artists of the region, including this issue’s featured author Nikki Giovanni.

Kiernan’s photography has been featured in several publications. The vast majority of pictures in UConn’s Dream Season were his, and the two mountain workshop books (on the Kentucky towns, Liberty and Scottsville) both had photo essays by Kiernan as well as several other photos.

He has received numerous awards including the First Place Gold Medal from the C.A.S.E. Circle of Excellence Awards Program, the Award of Merit from Best Photography Magazine, and the First Place Grand Award for Color Photography from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. He currently resides in Blacksburg, Virginia. [End Page 115]
